Before we dive into the fun stuff, let's talk about how to keep both you and your device safe. Working with electronics, like your awesome a robot, game console or lightsaber, is generally quite safe, but there are a few important things to remember, especially when it comes to the battery and electronic components. Follow these safety tips to ensure a great experience with your robot!
If anything ever feels hot, or starts smoking, don't panic quickly call for an adult and move away from your robot.
Your device is powered by a lithium-ion battery, which is amazing because it can last a long time and gives your gadget lots of energy. But just like any superhero power source, it needs to be treated with care:
Inserting the Battery: Always make sure to put the battery in the right way round. If you're not sure, ask an adult to help you check.
Charging: Don't leave your battery charging unattended for a long time. Once it's fully charged, unplug it. This helps keep the battery healthy and prevents overheating.
Select an appropriate location for charging: Ensure that it is charged in a location away from flammable items.
Discharging: Try not to let the battery discharge (run out) completely. When your robot's power gets low, give it a break and recharge the battery.
Avoid extreme temperatures: Don't store the battery in temperatures below freezing or above 30°C (Ideally store between 15 - 25°C)
Handling: Batteries don't like being poked, squished, or getting wet. Handle the battery carefully and keep it in a safe place when not in use.
The brain of your device is its circuit board, full of tiny pins and parts that make everything work:
Touching Components: Try not to touch the electronic components and pins on the boards too much. Oils from your skin can cause damage over time. If you need to handle the board, try to hold it by the edges.
Avoiding Short circuits: Make sure not to let metal objects (like tools or other electronics) sit on or touch the pins and the board. This can create a short circuit and might damage your device or even cause injury.
Avoid bending pins: if pins get bent together switch off the device, remove the battery and attempt to bend the pins back into place before putting the battery back in.
Workspace Cleanliness: Keep your workspace clean and clear of liquids. Spills can be dangerous when electronics are involved.
Adult Supervision: It's a good idea to have an adult around when you're working on your device, especially when you're charging the battery or handling the electronic parts.
Take Breaks: If you're feeling frustrated or tired, take a break. Mistakes are more likely to happen when you're not at your best.
Remember, taking good care of your gadget means it will be able to go on adventures with you for a long time. And most importantly, you'll be safe and sound, ready to explore the world of electonics together!
The battery is very unlikely to catch fire, but in the event there is a problem please bare in mind the following safety points.
1. Do Not Panic
Stay calm. Panicking can make the situation worse. Quickly assess the situation to determine your next steps.
2. Evacuate the Area
Ensure that everyone in the vicinity moves away from the fire to a safe distance. Lithium-ion battery fires can release harmful chemicals.
3. Avoid Water
Do not use water to extinguish a lithium-ion battery fire. Water can react with the battery materials and potentially make the fire worse.
4. Use an appropriate Fire Extinguisher
If available, use a powder fire extinguisher designed for metal fires. If a powder extinguisher is not available, a CO2 extinguisher can be a secondary option. Always check the extinguisher label to ensure it's suitable for electrical fires.
5. Ventilate the Area
If it's safe to do so, open windows and doors to allow the smoke and fumes to dissipate. Avoid inhaling the fumes.
6. Call Emergency Services
If the fire is large or not controllable with a fire extinguisher, evacuate immediately and call the emergency services. Inform them that it's a lithium-ion battery fire.
7. Do Not Touch Remnants
After the fire has been extinguished, do not touch the remains of the battery or device. It could still be extremely hot or release harmful chemicals. Wait for professionals to handle the cleanup.
8. Dispose of Damaged Batteries Properly
After the situation is under control and it's safe to do so, ensure that the damaged battery is disposed of properly. Contact local waste management services to find out the best way to dispose of lithium-ion batteries.
Remember:
Always prioritize personal safety and the safety of others. If a battery fire occurs, following these steps can help manage the situation more safely. It's also important to regularly inspect your devices and batteries for any signs of damage or wear and to replace them if necessary to prevent such incidents.
